چکیده

We developed a system with which children who have difficulty correctly pronouncing words to practice their pronunciation. It allows exercises to be individually tailored to each child’s pronunciation needs. Three speech evaluation methods were prepared for each type of presented words: automatic speech recognition, phonemic discrimination between the correct and the probable error pronunciation of a consonant period and articulation tests from speech-languagehearing therapists. For 3 or 4 months, we performed practical field tests with nine students in special support education classes in four elementary schools. In the tests, we realized medical-educational-engineering collaboration and the technical support of local-community volunteers.

Many kids have difficulty pronouncing certain sounds and their parents are forced to pay for speech therapy for their children. We hope to create a web application that doubles as a game in order to help children who are undergoing speech therapy recognize and pronounce certain sounds. The game should keep children wanting to play more, making their speech therapy seem like less of a chore and ...

The emerging lexicon of children with phonological delays: phonotactic constraints and probability in acquisition.

The effects of phonotactic constraints (i.e., the status of a sound as correctly or incorrectly articulated) and phonotactic probability (i.e., the likelihood of a sound sequence) on lexical acquisition have been investigated independently. This study investigated the interactive influence of phonotactic constraints and phonotactic probability on lexical acquisition in 3 groups of children: chi...

Pronunciation dependent language models

Speech recognition systems are conventionally broken up into phonemic acoustic models, pronouncing dictionaries in terms of the phonemic units in the acoustic model and language models in terms of lexical units from the pronouncing dictionary. Here we explore a new method for incorporating pronunciation probabilities into recognition systems by moving them from the pronouncing lexicon into the ...

Evaluating the Pronunciation Component of Text-to-Speech Systems for English: A Performance Comparison

The automatic derivation of word pronunciations from input text is a central task for any text-to-speech system. For general English text at least, this is often thought to be a solved problem, with manually-derived linguistic rules assumed capable of handling ‘novel’ words missing from the system dictionary. Data-driven methods, based on machine learning of the regularities implicit in a large...

Pronunciation verification of English letter-sounds in preliterate children

Correctly reading letter-sounds is an essential first step towards reading words and sentences. Pronunciation assessment of letter-sounds is an important component of preliterate children’s education, and automating this process can have several advantages. We propose a method to automatically verify the pronunciations of a letter-sound task administered to kindergarteners and first graders in ...
